A great free collaboration tool
by: bm4acd on 03-Mar-2008 05:13:38 PM

Pros: I don't have to cowork with my colleagues or friends remote from me face to face. It can save me many traffic time.

I can also use this tool to teach my kids to do their homework when I am on a business trip. The UI is quite intuitive. I think my kids will know how to use gogrok.

Great and helpful tool. Just like its name "grok".

A slightly different perspective on performance
by: nvblue on 06-Mar-2008 06:30:17 PM

Pros: As a user of Gogrok, I think CNet Editor and Seth gave a good overview of Gogrok first public beta release. But I will like to give Gogrok potential users a slightly different perspective on the performance:

1) Base on my experience, the most contributing factor to Gogrok performance is the network connection speed. Other factors count too, refer to the minimum system requirements as indicated on the Gogrok website.

2) In seth's review, I notice Seth was having a slow (relay) connection when he used Gogrok, as indicated by the orange connection icon. Note the connection icon exhibits 2 colors: green indicates direct (P2P) connection, and orange means relay, when the connection needs to be diverted to a 3rd party server before it reaches the other user. Gogrok performs really well when users achieve P2P connection, but when relay connection is used, the performance tends to degrade and largely depend on location and connection speed between the user and the Gogrok relay server.

3) Gogrok will attempt to establish P2P connection whenever possible, but stringent corporate firewalls and NAT servers may prevent this. This is one area Gogrok should improve in order to achieve better performance for most users. More relay servers that cover strategic locations for users in different regions having relay connection is important too.

I'm using Gogrok to collaborate with my coworkers and it performs well to me.
by: usatechlover on 21-May-2008 11:50:35 PM

Pros: I think it's a handy little tool for people who don't know much about computer. The UI design is pretty straight forward and user friendly. I'm using cable internet so the connection status is quite acceptable. I believe it's going to be a great tool for people like me who have to work at home, business sales, companies which have offshore sites, and online education programs, etc.

Cons: One thing that I hope Gogrok to keep improving is that it only runs with Skype so far. Some of my colleagues are not Skype users and this would drive them away.

Gogrok definitely is a remote tool that worth to try.
by: LaurenJC on 22-May-2008 12:31:52 AM

Pros: To me, free use software with no charge is one of the best reasons to choose Gogrok over other remote access tools. Especially when you see the gas price is going up again and even the same hamburger you always order are costing you one more quarter; you'll know what I mean. Free doesn't always equal to rubbish, at least Gogrok is not! I tried online tutoring high school math and it ran smoothly.

Cons: Did I mention I once gogroking with my ex to book a hotel room at work but got caught up by my boss? That's another story anyway....well, if you want me to share a con about Gogrok, that's a one....

(this review has been slightly edited, due to some words are not recognized.)

Gogrok User Review【Editor's Review from CNet】

Following is the Editor's Review from CNet. We are thankful for all the commands, everything is welcome! :)

Gogrok is a companion to Skype that gives Skype users remote-access capabilities. More than a typical plug-in but not able to stand on its own, the Skype-Gogrok combo makes for a good voice- and remote-access tech-support duo that's not quite dynamic.

Gogrok interface is reminiscent of Skype's, but requires its own login. It features a connection status indicator, docking buttons, Skype contacts importing--which is fast but must be done at every login--and three headshots indicating your status and the status of contacts you're connected to. Double-click on a contact to initiate the connection, and Gogrok will activate voice calling with Skype. Remote program control begins once you select which of your active programs, or your entire PC, should be guest-controlled.

The familiar interface doesn't help the program run smoothly. The program is highly dependent on the system resources of the computers involved. Throw in varying Internet connection speeds and stability becomes a major problem. Mouse movements were usually more responsive than keyboard inputs, and read-only access runs smoother than edit-level permissions. Labels at the top of the remote screen make program status accessible. Skype itself handles any file transfers. Also, Gogrok has two help resources, a standard user-initiated query and a feature that's activated in a child window by relevant keyboard and mouse commands.

Since so much of Gogrok's performance depends on user-end variables--memory, processor, Internet connection--we can't yet fully endorse this product for successful home-user remote access. But it's definitely worth keeping an eye on.

Gogrok User Review【Gogrok for E-Learning】

Here is a Gogrok review sent by user lcswater

As a teacher, Gogrok has helped me a lot on distance learning. When my students have questions on software usage or study subjects, I can easily operate on their computers through Gogrok to show them what to do or to solve their problems. For some class projects like web design, website development, and video editing, I can work through Gogrok with its remote desktop function to show the students the steps they need to know. The greatest part of Gogrok is its real-time interaction. The students can give their feedback to me right away during demonstration so that I am able to offer more detail or further instructions. I has benefited as well from the convenience of Gogrok when I am teaching electromagnetism. The students can now understand the operating procedures through online learning with Gogork. I concluded that Gogrok is a good remote desktop connection tool. It's my perfect teaching aid and makes my classes run smooth. Furthermore, Gogork has made online learning with more possibilities.

Not Satisfied with MSN and Skype? Gogrok Can Give You More!

Online communication is an unavoidable trend. The usage grows along with the popularity of high speed internet service. When we just started using email in the old days, we thought we had it all. But soon ICQ was introduced to the world in the late 90's; we saw how efficient an instant communication tool could be and how far technology could reach through internet. And then MSN, Yahoo Messenger, AOL Messenger, and Skype came out, they have shown us a whole new way of communication and the possibility of real-time interactions.

So do you think it's good enough so far? There are a group of people wouldn't even bother to nod at all. The only slogan they believe in and live for is that the existence of technology aims at fulfilling human needs. They are not satisfied with those functions the instant messengers have today. They saw more potential in it and decided to bring it forth. That's how we have Gogrok now.

The main idea of Gogrok is to broaden real-time online communication from text, voice, and video to multi-participant hands on collaboration. With Gogrok, you can co-edit the same file with your friends or colleagues in the same time. With Skype online voice chat assist, Gogrok users can do almost anything together!

Do You Grok??

What is Gogrok? You may get the basic idea from the word grok in its name.

To grok something is to understand something so well that it is fully absorbed into oneself. The word grok is introduced by Robert A. Heinlein in his science fiction novel "Stranger in a Strange Land"in 1961. The word derives from Martian in the novel and originally means "to drink" but metaphorically means "to take it all in", "to understand fully", or "to be at one with." The word grok was then quickly adopted by the youth culture of 90's. In common usage, "do you grok?" means "do you get it?" (Definition from CIO-Midmarket.com)

So the name Gogrok pretty much says it all. The main purpose of this software is to help people understand each other fully in the online communication environment. It can do much more than just text and voice chatting. It enables different users to view at the same screen and to work at the same file. It's a convenient tool you must have!
